Creating Space

Garden

This exciting new initiative devised with Newry and Mourne District Council technical department consists of artists working in partnership with horticultural staff and engineers. Together they transform derelict spaces into imaginative play areas for children, using art and the creative process. The unique aspect of Creating Space is that the team works directly with local children, giving them ownership of their ideas, direct input into the finished work and taking ownership and pride in the spaces as they grow.

Like the children who helped with the design, planting and sculptures in the gardens and by the canal bank, the features will grow with the changing seasons.

This project demonstrates what can be achieved when the children, their schools and communities, through the medium of arts, are given the opportunity to contribute to their environment.

Creating Space is currently supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
