January News
What can you imagine for Newry?
Last
year Sticky Fingers launched The Tower of Imagination sculpture on the
A1 road at Newry. Created by artist Maurice Harron, the sculpture stands
as a beacon of and for the children of Newry but also as a beacon for
hope, opportunity, forward thinking and imagination for us, the
grown-ups, who may have lost that little bit of magic we so easily
believed in as children. This year, Sticky Fingers is commissioning a
public art trail for Hill Street in Newry and is now seeking imaginative
applications from suitably qualified artists and crafts workers.
In
association with Newry and Mourne District Council, Sticky Fingers is
looking for four artists of differing disciplines to collaborate with
primary school children on an integrated public art scheme for Hill
Street, Newry. Each artist will deliver a series of workshops in Newry
to work with local children on creating a permanent art installation in
one of four sites along Hill Street. In keeping with Sticky Fingers'
programme ethos, the workshops will be child-centred, with the themes of
the final work arising from the children's imagination. Each art
installation will be finished to a high quality and should combine the
children's work with that of the artist. It is envisaged that the
workshop time spent with the children will be used as a research period
for each artist to create their element of the final work, both elements
working in tandem with one another.
To download the Artist Brief, click here.
The deadline for all applications is 10am January 16th 2012. Late submissions will not be considered.
For further details contact the Programme Manager at elaine@stickyfingersarts.co.uk.
This project is kindly funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Lottery Fund and Newry and Mourne District Council.
2012 St Patrick's Festival, Newry: Call for Carnival Artists
Over
the coming months Sticky Fingers Early Years Arts will have several
great opportunities for artists experienced in working with community
groups on high-quality carnival projects.
We
are now looking for expressions of interest from suitably qualified
candidates to devise and deliver community carnival spectacles with
various youth and children's groups across the Newry and Mourne area. It
is anticipated that these projects will commence at the beginning of
February, running until mid March. The successful candidates will each
collaborate with a local group, delivering a series of workshops to
devise and produce a carnival project for the 2012 St Patrick's
Festival, Newry.
Download the application here (Pdf version only) or request one by emailing the Programme Manager at elaine@stickyfingersarts.co.uk (Pdf and Word versions).
Deadline: 10am January 16th 2012. Late submissions will not be considered.

Challenging Creativity
Here
in Sticky Fingers we are passionate about early years creativity and we
want you to feel the same way. A new addition to our website About Early Years Arts explores all things early years. Recent content includes an essay from Roisin Cotter on challenging creativity. Roisin
is a parent and creative practitioner working in early years settings
through environmental and visual arts. In 2011 Roisin completed the
Sticky Fingers Early Years Arts 'Developing Creativity in the Early
Years' module course, certified by Stranmillis University College. If you have any suggestions for future content for our About Early Years Arts page, please do get in touch with us on elaine@stickyfingersarts.co.uk, we would love to hear your ideas.

Sticky
Fingers is hosting a special training day for early years teachers,
artists and other professionals on Friday 14th October in Newry, Co.
Down. Delivered by La Baracca's Artistic Co-director Bruno Cappagli,
this theatrical and general arts training will explore the body and
found objects as a springboard for the creation of stories and
characters.
'Telling'
is a theatrical and general arts workshop for teachers and educators
which will develop participants' artistic skills for the early years.
This engaging workshop is an opportunity for early years practitioners
to approach complex languages, gradually exploring the possibilities
and limits of one's expressiveness. Offering fractions and images of
experience, this training will allow participants to share their own
experiences and knowledge that everyone can then later reprocess and
use in their personal and professional path.
The objects: This
workshop will focus on the object: the object as a creative
suggestion, as a means for the creation of a character or a story; the
object as an element that can influence improvisation and narration.
The body: A
workshop on moving bodies, bodies exploring the world of fantasy and
imagination: a physical theatre experience encouraging the discovery of
the places where 'stories appear'.
Requirements:
Comfortable clothes (please note we will work barefoot).
Please bring a small object with you (a mirror, a spoon, a comb...)
Cost: This unique training day is available at a special rate of £30 (inclusive of lunch). Book online or call the Sticky Fingers office on +44 (0)28 3025 7885.

Every three years audiences from the whole world come together to celebrate and in 2011, ASSITEJ Denmark and ASSITEJ Sweden have the privilege of hosting and organising this extraordinary event.
The theme "Building Bridges, Crossing Borders" is reflected in the cultural diversity of the performances and in the joint nationality of hosts Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmoe, Sweden.
Sticky Fingers will be attending this fantastic event and will be tweeting live from Copenhagen and Malmoe over the coming days. Follow us on www.twitter.com/earlyyearsart for live updates on events and performances.

Public Art
The Perspectives temporary public art project with artist Sally Maidment has now come to a close. The project was funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Small Grants Programme and Newry and Mourne District Council and was also supported by the Buttercrane Shopping Centre. A big thank you to everyone who worked so tirelessly on this project and also to everyone who engaged with the installations across the city so positively over the last two months. The Tower of Imagination public art sculpture is due to be installed and launched on site along the A1 at Newry during July. This magical tower, created by artist Maurice Harron, is the result of a Sticky Fingers' public art commission, funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Lottery Fund and supported by the Department for Regional Development Roads Services, Newry and Mourne District Council, Kingspan and Solarite. Sticky Fingers is now looking for children's stories and poems about this mysterious and magical tower. These stories will become part of the history of the tower, displayed on the Sticky Fingers' website and archived for generations to come to discover, read and enjoy. April News
Perspectives
March 30th - April 30th 2011
The Perspectives Public Art Project launched on Wednesday 30th March
in the Buttercrane
Shopping Centre with an exhibition of children's artwork which inspired a
series of art installations across Newry. Attended by some of the
participating children from St. Ronan's P.S. and St. Joseph's Convent
P.S., Mayor of Newry and Mourne Mick Murphy, local Councillors and
management of the Buttercrane Shopping Centre, the launch celebrated
local children's perspectives on life in the city.
Based on children's views of life in the city, the project involved an intensive series of research workshops by artist Sally Maidment with over three hundred local children to discover their views on their locality and daily life. By placing the children in roles such as civil engineers/town planners the research aimed to provide a glimpse of a world through children's eyes and reveal how they would deal with tasks and problems solely dealt with by adults in our society. The resulting temporary artworks installed in locations across the city aim to demonstrate the contribution children can make to our society and culture if we are prepared to hear their voices.
The exhibition will be open for a week until Friday 1st April and the art installations across Newry will remain in place for another month. The artworks can be found in the Buttercrane Shopping Centre, McClelland Park, Newry Bus Station, the South Ulster Housing buildings on Canal Street, Newry Market (on market days), Jennings Park, the Town Hall and along the canal bank between the Buttercrane and the Bus Station.
To download a map with the locations of each artwork click here.
Funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Lottery Fund and Newry and Mourne District Council. Supported by the Buttercrane Shopping Centre.

Allianz Arts & Business NI Awards
Sticky Fingers are delighted to announce that we have been nominated in two categories for the Allianz Arts and Business NI Awards. We have been shortlisted for the Community Award with our partners Milligan Reside Larkin Architects and for the Business Professional Development Award with our Chairperson Conor Haughey. The Awards ceremony takes place on January 20th in Belfast - best of luck to everyone involved!
Newry Market Christmas Workshops - Update
Unfortunately, the visual arts workshops due to take place in Newry market in the lead up to Christmas were cancelled because of dangerous weather conditions. No amount of Cecile's delicious hot chocolate and spiced apple cider could have circumvented the severe cold! Thankfully, the workshops will be rescheduled for late spring when more clement weather arrives. New dates will be posted here as soon as they are confirmed.
Fair Deal for the Arts NI
While the NI Executive has extended the consultation period for the
2011-15 draft budget from the 9th until the 16th February, there are
still just a few weeks left until the end of public consultation of the
NI Executive's Draft Budget for 2011-15. The Arts are facing a proposed
£4.2m budget cut, impacting directly on frontline services. These cuts
are disproportionately high compared with other sectors. For details on
how to help see the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's website.
And Finally...
Sticky Fingers would like to sincerely thank our audiences, colleagues, partners and friends for their continued support in 2010 and to wish you all a very creative new year.
Best wishes, The Sticky Fingers Team.
